TIME PERIOD
I think this happened around 1930 because slaves were still around and the language they use
is around that time
POINT OF VIEW
I think it shows how he saw it and what it is like having a friend that is a slave at 13 years old.
Chapters 6-11
WHY DID PAP LOCK UP HUCK?
Pap locked up Huck so that he could go to party also because he didn't like how Huck was changing. He was learning a lot more and dressing nicer.
WHAT IS AN ABOLITIONIST AND HOW DOES IT RELATE?
An abolitionist is someone who wants to end slavery. Huckleberry Finn is a story that still has slavery in it since the story was around the 1800s. Huck was scared of Mrs. Watson because he is friends with Jim and he is a slave.
WHAT GAVE HUCK AWAY WHEN PRETENDING HE WAS A GIRL?
Huck was talking a lot and he threw a piece of iron at the rats which gave it away.
CHAPTERS 12-16
STORY OF KING SOLOMON AND HOW JIM INTERPRETS IT
King Solomon was a story of when two women claimed to be the mother of his child. The king wanted the mothers to cut the kid in half and whoever didn't cut the kid and gave him up would be the real mom. Jim thought no one could have as much money as that king and no one would ever cut a kid in half.
WHEN JIM WAKES UP, WHAT'S JIMS REACTION TO HUCKS JOKE? HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT JIM?
Jim thought Huck was killed when they separated but Huck thought it would be funny to scare him. This shows that Jim cares about Huck since he was scared about him. Jim seems like a caring person.
JIM IS SUPERSTITIOUS FROM A HISTORICAL STANDPOINT, WHY?
I think Jim is like this because he was a slave. This didn't want to stop him though from trying to be free and living back with his family.
"IT WAS FIFTEEN MINUTES BEFORE I COULD WORK UP MYSELF TO GO AND HUMBLE MYSELF TO A NIGGER, BUT I DONE IT AND I WARN'T EVEN SORRY FOR IT AFTERWARDS NEITHER" WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT HUCK?
This shows that Huck doesn't care about what skin color you have, he will still care and treat you the same.
HUCK IS STUGGLING WITH GIVING JIM UP. OUTLINE THE BATTLE WITH HIM SELF, EXPLAIN THE ACTIONS WHEN THE MEN CAME LOOKING FOR THE 5 ESCAPED SLAVES.
Huck couldn't decide on if it was a bad or good thing for letting Jim go. He thought about turning them back in or helping them but he didn't want to hurt Jim. Huck lied so they could leave the land because he said his father had small pox and so they wouldn't get it.
CHAPTERS 17- 21
GRANGERFORD FAMILY
This family is a great example of a perfect family. They are very wealthy and have their servants help them out. They have fancy clothes and nice things, but they are actually very hateful and scared. For a long time now, they have been having contention between the Shepherdson Family.
MARK TWAIN ALLUDES THE FUED BETWEEN THE FAMILY. WHY WOULD HE ADD THIS TO THE NOVEL? WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT THE TWO OCCUPATIONS?
The Grangerford kids tried to shot Harney Shepherdson, but they missed. Huck was confused about this and asked Buck why, and he explained the family feud to him but Buck actually doesn't know why they are fighting in the first place. In the book, Mark Twain refers to the family feud conflict between the farmer (“granger”) and rancher (“shepherd”). Back in the 1800's, farmers and ranchers ran into many conflicts on deciding which title went with which job. They families keep fighting and some of the Grangerford family gets killed from the Shepherdsons and Huck gets scared so he runs off with Jim.
HUCK SAYS " I DON'T WANT TO TALK MUCH ABOUT THE NEXT DAY. I RECKON I'LL CUT IT PRETTY SHORT." HOW DOES THE NARRATOR PLAY A ROLE IN THIS AND HOW HE THINKS
This gives us the idea that Huck is upset about what just happened and how it is something bad. Huck got scared and fled away and gets on the rafts as fast as he can with Jim, so this is showing that he was scared and something bad happened.
KING AND THE DUKE AND HOW HUCK GOES ALONG WITH THEIR STORY
They are river men that Huck and Jim find while they are floating down the river. They end up taking control of the raft that Huck and Jim are on. The younger man says that he isan impoverished English duke and gets Huck and Jim to treat him like royalty. The older man says he is the dauphin, the long lost son of King Louis of France. Huck and Jim then start to call them “Duke” and “Your Majesty."
PROBELMS WITH THE DUKES SOLUTION TO THE RAFT
Huck and the "Clan" are on the raft and have only been traveling at night to avoid Jim possibly being caught as a runaway. Since the King and Duke take over the raft, the Duke comes up with something. The solution is that while traveling during the day with Jim on the raft, If they get caught, they will pretend as if they had captured Jim as the missing runaway slave and are taking him back to his owner. The duke comes to believe that this is a great solution because Jim doesn't have to hide during the day and they can travel down the river and not waste time during the day. If they were to be questioned an told someone the runaway slave was found, word would travel fast and the owners would expect to have their slave back.
DRAWING OF THE TOWN THAT THE PLAY WILL BE HELD IN
CHAPTERS 22- 26
END OF CHAPTER WE SEE THE HANDBILL THAT THE KING AND THE DUKE WILL PASS OUT. THE DUKES SAYS, " IF THAT LINE DON'T FETCH THEM, I DON'T KNOW ARKANSAW!" WHY WOULD THE BOTTOM OF THE HANDBILL WORK TO GET PEOPLE INTO THE PLAY?
The bottom of the handbook was, "Low-Brow Comedy Show! XXX!" This line works because it insures that the people going into the play that nothing bad will happen. The king and the duke perform their "Shakespeare" to uneducated poor people and they end up not liking the show that much. That is why they put up the line at the bottom of the handbook and that is why it works people the people know that nothing bad will happen.
TOWARDS THE END OF CHAPTER 23 IT SAYS " WHAT WAS THE USE TO TELL JIM THERE WASN'T REAL KINGS AND DUKES? IT WOULDN'T DONE NO GOOD, AND BESIDES, IT WAS JUST AS I SAID; YOU COULDN'T TELL THEM FROM THE REAL KIND"WHY DOESN'T HUCK SEE THE USE IN TELLING JIM
He doesn't think it will help to tell Jim about the king and duke being fake because Jim misses and loves his family as much as the whites so it would make Jim upset, but it also would't do no good even if he did tell Jim.
WHAT DOES HUCK MEAN BY "YOU COULDN'T TELL THEM FROM THE REAL KIND"
I think he means the fake ones are impersonating the real ones, the real and fake ones are the same.
CHAPTER 24 READS " IT WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE A BODY ASHAMED OF THE HUMAN RACE' WHAT IS HUCK TALKING ABOUT? WHAT DOES IT TELL US ABOUT HUCK?
He feels this was way because the king and the duke are playing the parts of the dead mans brothers. They go around town and they make a big deal that the brother died before they arrived, the duke is playing one of the dead brothers and he is a deaf mute. Huck feels this way about it them making a body ashamed of the human race because the king and the duke are playing the parts of a dead mans brother but they do not know for sure if he is even dead or not.
IN CHAPTER 25 WE MEET THE DOCTOR. HOW DOES THE DOCTOR KNOW THAT THE KING AND THE DUKE ARE A FRAUD?
The doctor knows that the king and duke are frauds because he notices how bad the kings British accent is so he calls them out for lying and faking who they were.
THE KING AND THE DIKE CONSIDER LEAVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, WHY DONT THEY?
The king and the duke don't leave in the middle of the night with the money because Huck feels bad for the family because the child has a birth defect, so he wants to help them get their money back.
CHAPTER 27-30
WHY DID PEOPLE STAY UP WITH THE DEAD
to keep rodents away from attacking the dead. Funeral homes were not a thing back then so people had to stay around the body and watch over. The person was never left alone. The people that stayed up were the ones that were closer to the person that was dead.
WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM HUCK WHEN HE SAYS THE SLAVES WILL SEE THEIR FAMILY AGAIN
It tells a lot about Huck and how he is straight up when he talks about stuff like this. He was born with a abusive alcoholic father and he has gone through a lot the past few months. He tells Miss Mary Jane when she is crying about the separated family and how they will be reunited again
WHAT TWO METHODS WERE USED TO IDENTIFY THE BROTHERS ADN THE FRAUD
1. the tattoo on the mans chest and have asked the brothers many questions to test which one was lying
2. they had them write one a piece of paper to compare the hand written letters
CHAPTER 31-35
HUCK SAYS "YOU CAN'T PRAY A LIE." WHAT LIE IS HE TRYING TO PRAY ABOUT? WHAT DOES HE MEAN?
He finds out Jim has been taken and turned in as a runaway slave. Huck cries and worries because he doesn't know what to do. He can only think of writing a letter to Mrs. Watson and hopes that Jim finds her. He knows he can't pray a lie. He wants Jim to be free, and that is what is whole adventure was about.
WHY DOES HUCK TEAR UP THE LETTER HE IS WRITING
He talks about what happened to Jim and how he is trying to get him back. Huck tells her that he is still alive and that he faked his death. He didn't want any of this to happen so the letter is just hard for him to write which makes him tear up.
HUCK SAYS "TOM SAWYER FELL, CONSIDERABLE, IN MY ESTIMATION. ONLY I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. TOM SAWYER A NIGGER STEALER." WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS?
Tom is a good kid and Huck wouldn't see him doing this kind of stuff but all Tom was trying to do is help a friend in need.
HUCK SAYS TWO THINGS AT THE END OF CHAPTER 33
WHAT DOES HE MEAN BY THEM
a) "HUMANS CAN BE AWFUL CRUEL TO ONE ANOTHER"
he says this because he sees the king and the duke getting beaten up and he starts feeling bad because even though they have made mistakes they are still human and no one deserves that.
b) "BUT THAT'S ALWAYS THE WAY; IT DON'T MAKE NO DIFFERENCE WHETHER YOU DO RIGHT OR WRONG, A PERSON'S CONSCIENCE AIN'T GOT NO SENSE, AND JUST GOES FOR HIM ANYWAY."
he says this because he still feels bad and wrong that the king and the duke got treated like that.
WHY ARE TOM AND HUCK LOOKING FOR A MORE DIFFICULT WAY TO BREAK JIM FREE?
they have already done it once and got caught so this time they need to do it better and cover their tracks so they won't get caught again and so they can have Jim free.
CHAPTER 36-40
WHAT IS TOMS AND HUCKS MOTIVATION WHEN BREAKING JIM FREE?
Tom is just an adventurous boy so he was just doing it for the excitement and Huck was doing it because he wants Jim to be free and not to be held captive.
WHAT DO HUCK AND TOM MEAN BY LET ON? WHY DO THEY DO THIS?
Let on meant pretending for them so when they say let on when they are talking about Jim they are pretending it looks harder than it actually is.
WHY IS TOM WRITING LETTERS AND POSTING WARNINGS? WHY DID HE GIVE INSTRUCTIONS TO HIS AUNT AND UNCLE'S SLAVE? WHAT ARE HIS MOTIVATIONS FOR THIS?
The letters are a distraction for the family. Toms aunt and Uncle are scared because Tom ran away and he thinks it would be a good idea to write them letters/warnings. He tells them in the letter that Jim has been stolen so they would be focused on that so Huck and Tom would have more time to try and make an escape with Jim.
HOW IS THE PLANNING AND PLOTTING OF JIM'S ESCAPE BY TOM AND HUCK SATIRE?
Tom is making it so much harder than it is and making it seem like its something big.He thinks that there is more work than there should be. There are people today that do the same thing. When something happens they normally extend the truth and exaggerate on things that happened to make it harder and more of a big deal, even though in reality it is not.
HUCK SAYS "I KNOWED HE WAS WHITE INSIDE" ABOUT JIM. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND WHY DOES HE SAY IT?
He says this when Tom and them escape with Jim, but tom does get shot. Huck said that he knew Jim was white inside, because even knowing that Jim is a black slave, he told Huck that they needed a doctor to treat Tom not them because they were not doctors, so in that moment Huck was seeing Jim's "white" education inside of him.
CHAPTER 41
"AND THEN WHEN I WENT UP TO BED, SHE COM EUP WITH ME, AND FETCHED HER CANDLE, AND TUCKED ME IN, AND MOTHERED ME SO GOOD I FELT MEAN AND LIKE I COULDN'T LOOK HER IN THE FACE." WHY DOES HUCK FEEL THIS WAY
Huck was mothered by being tucked in and so he felt guilt when tom was in pain and he was in comfort when tom got shot in the calf. Huck is lying to his loved ones so he feels upset and guilty.
WE HEAR THE DOCTOR'S ACOOUNT OF HIS EXPERIENCE TREATING TOM. CAN WE COME TO AN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT JIM FROM THIS? WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT HIM?
when the doctors say that they can't cut out the bullet from tom, jim comes out and helps even thought the doctors think he is a run away slave. Jim is a sweet hearted person who cares a lot about Huck and Tom. He wants to treat everyone the same no matter what.
WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM TOM FROM WHAT HE SAYS WHEN HE WAKES UP AFTER BEING TREATED FOR THE GUNSHOT WOUND?
we realize he is more adventurous because he already knew Jim was free but he helped Huck anyways just for the fun of it. He now has a story to tell from his wound and he did this all for the thrill of it.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HUCK IN 3-4 SENTENCES?
I think that Huck is a very nice, brave and smart person. He cares about his friends a lot and will do anything for them, just like how he has helped Jim a lot from being a slave. He is very brave and takes risk even if it can lead to bad things. He has made many smart plans like faking his death and 'freeing'
Jim. I think the book Huckleberry Finn was very interesting.
